103 Miles

Today is the day I chose to ride along on tour with Elizabeth in her car. We left the Quality Inn at precisely 8:00 a.m. Making our way to the first scheduled stop, we passed through Eutawville and into Berkley County before arriving in Monck's Corner at the Old Santee Canal Park. This was a gorgeous park with lots of beautiful old trees, spacious green grass, an interpretive center with boardwalks and trails, a museum, and a huge old house (which is where we ate a lunch of fried catfish and all the trimmings). The freshly caught fish was cooked outside on the premises especially for our group. Dining tables were set up under huge, billowing tents making for a very enjoyable lunch!

There was quite a lot to see and do at this stop so we stayed for several hours before moving on. We piled back into our cars and drove a scenic six miles to Overton Park where we were served dessert. It was a nice, beachy setting and many people went for a swim.

This was the last stop of the day, so a group of us decided to head back to Santee. On the way back, we passed by Francis Marion's burial site. Since it was only one mile off the main road, the group was nice enough to pull in and let me see it and snap a few pictures. The genealogist in me could not stand to be so close without taking a peek! The area was very shady, green and lush with the "Swamp Fox" and his wife buried side by side inside a fenced area. It appeared to be a rather private little cemetery as only a few others are buried here.

That night for supper we ate at a little Italian dive.
